ALBANY -- The Albany Common Council nearly unanimously approved an expanded ban on smoking in city parks on Monday night. Currently, the City bans smoking only in areas where children would likely play. Council members said that they wanted to keep the air clean for non-smokers and former smokers, as many members shared stories of how they quit smoking. The new ban would include events like Tulip Festival and Alive at Five. People caught smoking in a city park would face a $50 fine, but the council said it hopes for a community effort, with residents discouraging others and self-policing. One council member, Michael O'Brien, abstained from a vote over concerns that it was overly broad and wide reaching. He also asked for clarification whether the ban would affect the city's golf course. The council did not list a start date to allow its counsel to research and respond to the issue.

For a consultation, call 1-888-Law-4-Life or visit www.tullylegal.com. When faced with a complaint of discrimination, harassment, retaliation, or other unlawful employment practice, employers are legally obligated to conduct an investigation into the complaint. This type of investigation is one of the most effective steps an employer can take towards the remedy of illegal activity in the workplace. Not only can a workplace investigation establish a strong defense in the event of a lawsuit, but it can also help prevent future issues as it demonstrates your company's commitment to maintaining a workplace free from discrimination or other unlawful acts. There are specific steps to conducting a workplace investigation that, when followed correctly, result in a thorough and fair investigation. Many employers facing complaints retain outside counsel to conduct the investigation to ensure all parties involved perceive the investigation as fair and complete. Further, in the event of a lawsuit, having an impartial third party familiar with the laws and regulations conduct the investigation can assist in an employer's defense. Our attorneys are available to conduct workplace investigations. We take the care to properly document the investigation and produce a report of our findings to both parties. Further, if corrective or disciplinary action is necessary, we will advise on the appropriate type of action. Judge Helena Heath-Roland today released two web advertisements as part of her innovative multi-media campaign for re-election as Albany City Court Judge. Judge Heath-Roland and her campaign team have creatively incorporated social media into traditional election campaign procedures as a means of keeping the public and volunteers updated on the campaign's efforts and progress. The ads demonstrate Judge Heath-Roland's commitment to faithfully serve with high ethical standards, and her dedication to the well-being of the Albany community. The first web ad highlights Judge Heath-Roland's community work; the second web ad highlights her more than twenty years of judicial and legal experience. "I strongly believe the best campaign is one brought straight to the people so they can make an informed decision on Election Day. These web ads make it convenient for Albany citizens to view, share, and discuss my contributions and qualifications as a part of our important democratic process," said Judge Heath-Roland. During her tenure as City Court Judge, Heath-Roland has tirelessly volunteered and advocated for youth. She has coordinated programs for the past fourteen years with Albany Law School to expose female and minority law students to a variety of career paths and share keys to becoming a successful lawyer. As a past co-chair of the Lawyer in the Classroom Committee for the Capital District Women's Bar Association (CDWBA), she spearheaded a program where members of the CDWBA made law-related presentations to students in Capital District area middle and high schools. Judge Heath-Roland also collaborated with the Albany Police Department to establish the Albany Youth Police Council, which was created in 2006 to facilitate communication and foster mutual respect between inner city teenagers and police officers in the City of Albany. Prior to Judge Heath-Roland's work on the bench, she served as a Court Attorney at the New York Court of Appeals, the highest level court in the State, an Assistant Attorney General in the litigation bureau of the NYS Department of Law, an Assistant Counsel to the NYS Department of Economic Development, and a Senior Counsel for the NYS Assembly Speaker. The campaign web advertisements were co-produced by Mehigan, Bellone & Associates, Inc., and Blue State Strategies.
